Asthma

Pattern: Vacuity of Kidney.

Key symptoms: Persistent wheezing aggravated by physical exertion, shallow inspiration, shortness of breath, fatigue, cold extremities. Pale tongue, deep weak thready pulse.

Formula: Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan [Kidney Qi Pill from the Golden Cabinet].

Treatment method: Supplement the Kidney and absorb Qi.

Acupuncture: B23 shen shu, Kidney-3 tai xi, UB13 fei shu, Ren 17 tan zhong, Ren6 Qi hai, M-BW-1b ding chuan

Formula Ingredients: Jing gui shen Qi wan: Shu di huang (Radix Rehmanniae preparata), Shan yao (Rhizoma Dioscoreae), Shan zhu yu (Fructus Corni), Ze xie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Fu ling (Poria), Mu dan pi (Cortex Moutan), Zhi fu zi (Radix Aconiti lateralis preparata), Rou gui (Cortex Cinnamomi)

Modifications: For swollen feet and retention of urine, add Niu xi (Radix Achyranthis bidentatae, Che qian zi (Semen plantaginis)

For severe vacuity asthma, add Ren shen (Radix Ginseng), Wu wei zi (Fructus Schisandrae) , hu Tao ren (Semen Persicae), bu gu zhi, ge jie

For vaucous Kidney Yin is predominant, delete Zhi fu zi (Radix Aconiti lateralis preparata), Rou gui (Cortex Cinnamomi), and combine with sheng mai san

For congestion of the Lung by phlegm-turbidity coupled with Kidney vacuity, use su zi jiang Qi tang

For vaucous Yang with phlegm depression affecting the Heart and Lung, use zhen wu tang
