Cough

Pattern: Invasion of Lung by wind cold

Key symptoms: Cough with scratchy throat and thin white phlegm, aversion to cold. Headache, stuffy runny nose. Thin white coating, floating taut pulse.

Formula: San ao tang [Three-Unbinding Decoction] / Zhi sou san [Stop Coughing Powder]

Treatment method: Dispel wind, ventilate the Lung, relieve coughing

Acupuncture: Lung-7 lie que, UB13 fei shu, Large Intestine-4 he gu, SJ5 wai guan

Formula Ingredients: 

San ao tang: Ma huang (Herba Ephedrae), Xing ren (Semen Armeniacae), Gan cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae).

Zhi sou san: Jing jie (Herba Schizonepetae), Zi wan (Radix Asteris), Bai bu (Radix Stemonae), bai qian, Jie geng (Radix Platycodi), Chen pi (Pericarpium Citri reticulatae), Gan cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae)

Modifications: For phlegm-dampness: add Ban xia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), Hou po (Cortex Magnoliae officinalis), Fu ling (Poria)

For heat is obstructed by cold, add Shi gao (Gypsum fibrosum), Huang qin (Radix Scutellariae), Sang bai pi (Cortex Mori)
