Cough

Pattern: Liver fire cough.

Key symptoms: Hacking cough with scanty sticky phlegm, distention at chest and costal region, bitter taste in the mouth, symptoms related to emotional states.  Red tongue thin yellow coating, rapid wiry pulse. 

Formula: Xie Bai San [Drain the White Powder] with Dai ge san (Indigo and Clam Shell Powder) 

Treatment method: Clear Liver fire, drain the Lung, relieve coughing.

Acupuncture: UB13, fei shu, UB18 gan shu, Lung-8 jing qu, LV3 tai chong

Formula Ingredients: Xie bai san: Sang bai pi tang, Di gu pi (Cortex Licii), geng mi, Gan cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae)

Dai ge san: Qing dai, hai ge ke

Modifications: To increase the function of clearing Liver fire, add Shan zhi zi (Fructus Gardeniae), Huang qin (Radix Scutellariae), Mu dan pi (Cortex Moutan)

For chest pain, add yu jin, si gua luo

For difficult expectoration of sticky phlegm, add Chuan bei mu (Bulbus fritillariae cirrhosae), fu hai shi, Jie geng (Radix Platycodi)For cough with dry throat and moth, add Bei sha shen (Radix Glehniae), Mai men dong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Tian hua fen (Radix Trichosanthis)
