Cough

Pattern: Yin vacuity cough

Key symptoms: Dry hacking cough without phlegm, or with scanty sticky white blood tinged phlegm, gradual hoarseness, dry throat and mouth, afternoon tidal fever, five palms heat, night sweating, emaciation. Red tongue little coating, rapid thread pulse.  

Formula: Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang [Glehnia and Ophiopogonis Decoction].

Treatment method: Nourish Yin, moisten the Lung, transform phlegm, relieve coughing.

Acupuncture: UB13 fei shu, Lung-5 chi ce, Lung-7 lie que, Kidney-6 zhao hai.

Formula Ingredients: Sha shen mai men dong tang: Bei sha shen (Radix Glehniae), Mai men dong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Tian hua fen (Radix Trichosanthis), Yu zhu (Rhizoma Polygonati odorati), bian dou, Sang ye (Folium Mori), Gan cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae)

Modifications: To increase the effects of moistening the Lung and dissolving phlegm, add Chuan bei mu (Bulbus fritillariae cirrhosae), Xing ren (Semen Armeniacae)

For coughing with shortness of breath, add Wu wei zi (Fructus Schisandrae) , He zi (Fructus Chebulae)

For deficient heat, add Di gu pi (Cortex Licii), Yin chai hu (Radix Stellariae), Qing hao (Herba Artemisiae annuae),Bie jia (Carapax Trionycis),For phlegm containing blood, add Mu dan pi (Cortex Moutan) , Shan zhi zi (Fructus Gardeniae), ou jie
