Pattern

Key symptoms: Difficult swallowing with pain and sensation of obstruction, especially solid. Emaciation, dry mouth, constipation, five palms heat. Dry red tongue with cracks, thready rapid pulse. 

Formula: Sha shen mai dong tang [Glehnia and Ophiopogonis Decoction]

Treatment method: Nourish Yin, generate liquid, clear heat

Acupuncture: Ren22 tian tu, Ren17 tan zhong, Ren13 shang wan, Pericardium-6 nei guan, ST36 zu san li, SP6 san Yin jiao

Formula Ingredients: Sha shen mai men dong tang: Bei sha shen (Radix Glehniae), Mai men dong (Radix Ophiopogonis), Tian hua fen (Radix Trichosanthis), Yu zhu (Rhizoma Polygonati odorati), bai bian dou, Sang ye (Folium Mori), Gan cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae)

Modifications: To reinforce nourishing Yin and clearing heat, add: Xuan shen (Radix Scrophulariae), Dan shen (Radix Salviae miltiorrhizae), Sheng di huang (Radix Rehmanniae), shi hu, Jin Yin hua (Flos Lonicerae), shan dou gen, Yin chai hu (Radix Stellariae)

For hard stools, add Da huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma)
